Introduction
The Pigeon Key Foundation (www.pigeonkey.net), a nonprofit organization in the Florida Keys seeks four full-time Marine Science Education Interns for the spring 2009 term. The Foundation's goal is to provide hands-on educational opportunities to students who stay on our 4.5-acre island to learn about marine conservation. Interns are responsible for making science exciting, relevant and interesting to all types of learners by helping to deliver interactive programs that actively engage children, adolescents and their families, teachers and program leaders. Interns report directly to the Education Director and support the implementation and operations of the PKFMSC educational programs.
Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Development and delivery of education programs
- Assist in the development of interactive exhibits for our Marine Science Center
- Assist in managing education materials/equipment
- Assist with the preparation of funding proposals in support of education programs
- Assist with publicity and promotion of education programs
- Island maintenance, including: cooking and cleaning for education groups, salt water aquarium maintenance, recycling and waste management
Requirements
- CPR and first aid certified. Lifeguard and rescue training is preferred
- SCUBA certification is preferred
- Degree in marine biology, environmental sciences, education or a related field. Juniors and seniors pursuing a degree in one of these fields are also eligible.
- Responsible, organized, creative and self-motivated
- Can commit to full-time position from January through May
- Available for off-island excursions such as the Dolphin Research Center, Marathon Kayak and the Turtle Hospital
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
