
Environmental Compliance Specialist

Successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of environmental engineers and scientists to provide technical support at a Navy facility. Candidate will support the development, implementation and on-going analysis of environmental programs designed to monitor air and water quality, compliance issues, hazardous waste management, and spill response. Candidate will conduct wastewater and potable water sampling, coordinate laboratory analysis and appropriate paperwork, prepare reports to interpret laboratory results and write specifications for regulatory compliance, complete wastewater process permit applications. Candidate will handle hazardous and universal waste classification, manifesting and disposal requirements, including treatment standards and technologies. As a member of the spill response team candidate will be required to assist in responding to spill emergencies, also assist in compliance evaluations and inspections of waste generating facilities and processes. Additional responsibilities include management of the 90-day hazardous waste storage facility, inspection of hazardous waste Satellite Accumulation Areas, evaluation and implementation of P2 practices including waste reduction and utilization of environmentally preferable alternatives, and overall support for a broad spectrum of regulatory compliance (local, state, and federal environmental protection laws and regulations) for the facility.
BS in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field required. Three to five years of direct experience are required. Hazardous waste management training, 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training or 24-hour Emergency Response Training and Department of Transportation (DOT) training relating to hazardous materials and hazardous waste required.
Experience independently classifying and profiling Federal and State hazardous wastes in accordance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) regulations; experience completing and reviewing Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifests. Experience collecting wastewater, potable water and hazardous waste samples ensuring correct volume and preservatives for analyses and mandatory specifications including EPA Method guidelines.
Proficient communication skills including oral, written, and electronic correspondence.
Ability to effectively utilize office applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.). Interpersonal skills are absolutely necessary. Candidate must be eligible for Department of Defense secret security clearance and have a valid driver's license.
OSHA Respiratory Protection Training. Forklift certification. Asbestos inspector training.
Comprehensive knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. Familiarity with New York, Connecticut and Florida environmental regulations.
