Introduction
Global Footprint Network is seeking a full-time Lead Scientist to work in our global headquarters in Oakland, California.
The Lead Scientist will lead Global Footprint Network's ongoing scientific and research programs and provide technical expertise to the organization's 90 partner organizations worldwide in order to continue to advance the science and rigor of the Ecological Footprint methodology.
Global Footprint Network is a growing, international non-profit organization that promotes a sustainable economy by advancing the Ecological Footprint, a tool that makes sustainability measurable. The Ecological Footprint has become one of the most widely used sustainability metrics worldwide. It is the only tool that comprehensively measures human pressure on the planet against what the planet can supply, and it is therefore critical to the success of sustainable development.
Reporting to the Director of Research and Standards and working closely with the Executive Director, Mathis Wackernagel, the Lead Scientist will guide our internal team of researchers, expand and improve Global Footprint Network's analytical models, publish scientific papers, lead technical trainings and academic seminars, provide technical advice to other departments within the organization and to partner organizations within the partner network, and manage technical projects and initiatives.
Responsibilities
Major responsibilities will include:
- Leading and facilitating the scientific research process for the National Footprint Accounts Improvement initiative, to assure continuous development of the core science
- Recommending and implementing updates and revisions to national and sub-national Ecological Footprint accounting methodologies
- Serving as the primary advisor on issues regarding the science and development of Ecological Footprint technology, for partner organizations, governments, multinational agencies, academic institutions, businesses, and other users or potential users of the Ecological Footprint
- Publishing scientific articles, white papers, and other contributions to technical review forums and scientific journals
- Serving as chief trainer and lead scientific contact for research collaborations with governments, academic institutions, and Global Footprint Network partners
- Advising staff on technical projects related to city, corporate, and human development initiatives
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will be a professional scientific researcher with a background in environmental science and experience working in diverse scientific communities and interfacing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Advanced degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in fields such as environmental science, environmental or natural resource management, or ecological economics
- Demonstrated background in quantitative analysis, modeling, and computer programming
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly both in public forums and in writing
- Willingness to travel internationally
- Fluency in European languages a plus
