POSITION TITLE: Land Protection Specialist
LOCATION: Cooperstown, New York
STATUS: Full time

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Land Protection Specialist coordinates and implements land protection programs in concert with the Executive Director, primarily using conservation easements, but also via purchase cooperative projects with other partners as appropriate. The Land Protection Specialist is responsible for helping develop land protection projects that advance Otsego Land Trust conservation priorities as outlined in the Conservation Blueprint for the Otsego Region and for coordinating annual stewardship monitoring of easements. The Land Protection Specialist works closely with and is supervised by the Executive Director.

• Responds to protection inquiries and potential conservation transactions.
• Researches land ownership and conservation values of tracts identified as potential conservation transactions.
• Represents the Otsego Land Trust in relationships and negotiations with landowners.
• Designs multiple conservation easements, working effectively under pressure, setting and meeting deadlines.
• Prepares project packages and baseline documentation as appropriate.
• May manage staff, contractors and interns involved in land protection and easement monitoring efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree natural resources management, conservation, business, law or related field, and 2 to 3 years of work experience in conservation, real estate, historic preservation or other related experience.
• Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation and land protection.
• Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
• Ability and willingness to travel frequently and on short notice, sometimes on weekends.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Demonstrated ability to bring negotiations to closure.
• Perform under minimal supervision, consulting with supervisor on a routine basis.
• Effective communications with a wide range of people and ability to convey the mission of Otsego Land Trust to diverse groups.
• Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain.
• Computer familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain land protection records.
• Geographic Information System (GIS) skills preferred, but not required.
