
Agriculture and Environment Research Analyst

JOB DESCRIPTION: RESEARCH ANALYST IN AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
A research analyst in the environmental implications of agricultural production and agricultural policy will be a professional with academic training in the natural sciences related to conserving soil, improving water quality, and/or enhancing wildlife habitat in agricultural landscapes. The analyst will evaluate published research, analyze data, and consult with leading experts to produce research reports that will inform federal and state agricultural and environmental policy development and program implementation.
Specific duties:
- Conduct reviews of the scientific literature and report the implications of those reviews for public policy and programs.
- Secure, assemble, and analyze complex datasets regarding trends in funding for state and federal environmental programs, the extent to which those programs are producing meaningful results, and other such data relevant to informing public policy and program implementation.
- Identify, interview, and work with leading disciplinary experts to design and evaluate research reports and communicate research results to target audiences.
- Develop plain-language reports presenting research results that are designed to influence public policy and inform opinion leaders, policymakers, and advocates.
Qualifications:
- A strong commitment to environmental protection, natural resource conservation, and public health is essential.
- At minimum a B.S. degree in the natural sciences related to managing the natural resources and environmental implications of agricultural production.
- Demonstrated expertise in reviewing and interpreting the meaning of scientific literature for influencing public policy and programs.
- At ease with database and data management technology used to assemble and analyze data.
- Excellent writing, editing and personal communications skills.
- At ease working with and interviewing scientific experts.
- The ability to work collaboratively on a research team, with publicists and other staff.
- Experience working in the nonprofit sector and familiarity with remote sensing and geographic information systems are a plus.
Location: Ames, Iowa.
